Most dental problems can be prevented or brought under control by carrying out proper oral hygiene procedures. After your first visit to your dentist, you may be given a whole set of important oral hygiene instructions which are important for your long term oral health. These measures are meant to protect your teeth and gums from various diseases and keep your mouth fresh and clean.

Brushing

First and foremost, you will be instructed the correct method of brushing by which the bristles of the brush reach to clean all the aspects of your teeth. Brushing is recommended twice a day for optimal health and fresh breath.

Flossing

Eating food results in leftover food being stuck between your teeth. If this is not removed, it becomes hardened, and increases your risk of gum disease and decay. Flossing your teeth at least once daily to remove this helps to decrease your risk of gum disease and decay. Many people resist flossing, as it can be time consuming. To assist with this, there are different tools such as Flossettes, Hummingbird (a battery operated flosser).

Low intake of refined sugar

A healthy diet low in sugar is important for preventing decay. If sugar is consumed frequently, decay can often result, with the need for fillings and possibly other treatment.
